Behind The Music
Tyler Steege has remarkably strong skills as a drummer and a well-rounded percussionist, and particularly as a jazz performer. His knowledge of music fundamentals is thorough and his understanding of jazz drumming, in particular, is very strong. He is an excellent sight-reader and understands how to make the awkward drum-set notation of a jazz arrangement come alive. He has developed a great insight into the importance of listening carefully to music, and this is clearly reflected in his own playing. As an drummer, Tyler is both a mature role-player and soloist, creating music that has great feel and steady time in numerous styles of jazz, strong phrasing, and a clear sense of jazz nuance that only comes from years of hard practice and steady listening. In addition, he is an active listener and communicator while playing, skills that invite other performers into wonderful musical conversations. Tyler Steege really has a passion for music and is shown through his hard work, dedication and involvement as a musician.
Bio
A Musical Journey
Ever since at a young age, Tyler Steege has found great joy and satisfaction in making music and sharing it with friends and family. Tyler was first introduced to music at the age of five when his mother gave him Piano lessons. As he has played and progressed in Piano for a couple years, he eventually found an interest in the Cello in the 4th grade. Just as Tyler had a passion for Cello, he found an even bigger interest as a drum set player; Humorous as it is, his passion for drumset evolved from a video game, The Beatles Rock band. His real spark for drumset started at the age of 11 at the end of his 5th year in Elementary school when he played the Beatles Rock band game at home. He had become so entertained playing the rock band kit that his interest in cello fell short, and his interest for Drumset picked up. Shortly after his discovery for his passion as being a drumset player, Tyler’s parents invested in a drumset for himself to play and practice and as well had him take lessons for drumset and percussion from private instructors. Since then, Tyler has remained with drumset and percussion and has been very successful through his experiences. Tyler Steege is currently attending Northern Illinois University which is nationally known for its outstanding Jazz Studies program majoring in Performance in Jazz Studies. Currently Tyler performs and plays on the Chicago and Milwaukee scene.
